
Asthma in Children and Young People
- 1 million children (1 in 10) suffer from Asthma in the UK
- The equivalent of a classroom full of children dies every year from asthma in the UK
- 90% of childhood asthma deaths are associated with preventable factors
- Every 17 minutes a child is admitted to hospital in the UK because of their asthma
- Up to 70% of hospital admissions with asthma are avoidable with better self-management
- Asthma costs the NHS £2.3 billion each year
- The estimated annual cost of treating a child with asthma is higher than the cost per adult with asthma
- There were over 79,794 emergency hospital admissions for asthma in the UK in 2008-9, of these 30,740 were aged 14 years or under
