Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease
Cardiovascular disease is one of the largest health threats to the public today. Treatments at a late stage of disease are expensive and create a new population of survivors with heart failure and disability after stroke, for instance. In parallel with better clinical treatments the risk profile of the population is deteriorating. That is, the increase in the weight of the population and the related rise in people with diabetes are all contributing to the worsening of the public health.
Artherosclerosis, the narrowing of the artery wall due to the build up of materials like cholesterol, has a long preclinical phase. This means that there is an opportunity for intervention to prevent stroke and heart attack. Interventions such as lifestyle modification programs and drugs, have resulted in proven benefits on morbidity and mortality.
Effective prevention over lifetime (children to adults) and better implementation of secondary prevention requires an integrated approach to prevention and objective population based analysis of outcomes.
