Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
There are over 800,000 people in England currently diagnosed with COPD and an estimated further 2 million undiagnosed cases.
Over 20,000 patients with COPD die each year in England. The overall economic cost to the NHS is just short of one billion pounds a year and growing.
The launch of the National Service Strategy for COPD provides a framework of recommendations for service improvement that the HIEC can work towards so optimising the whole patient pathway from prevention, diagnosis, to health interventions and finally end of life care.
