Maternity care
Birth is a normal physiological process that has a profound effect on women, their babies and families and on the wider society in general.
Promotion of normal birth (DoH, 2008; NHS NE London, 2009; Maternity & Newborn Clinical Programme Board, 2010) and provision of one to one midwifery care to support this are key priorities for care.
Maternity care is unique because it crosses traditional boundaries through provision of care for normal pregnancy and birth, health promotion and public health and recognition and management of women with complex obstetric, health and social lives .
The challenge for current provision of maternity care across the HIEC region is to maximise return from existing budgets and staff while planning for future service needs.
