Peer Support Scheme for young adults with Asthma

Asthma UK has set up a support scheme for 18-25 year olds with asthma. This is a befriending project to help young people with asthma, deal with many of the complex problems facing them, such as moving home, suddenly having to pay for prescriptions or starting at university. These challenges can be isolating and impact on their asthma managment.

The scheme is a great way for young people to learn new skills and give something back to their community.

Visit http://www.asthma.org.uk/what_you_can_do/volunteer/support_for_young_pe.html for more information and a poster that you can download. If you like to know more or think your'd benefit from having a support group set up in your area, then please get in touch with Clare Hodder, Youth Engagement Officer at chodder@asthma.org.uk.

Finding the missing millions with COPD

On the 19th November 2010 NECLES, together with Novartis hosted a creativity event to generate ideas to find the missing millions with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

COPD effects approximately 800,000 people in England alone and a further 2 million people are thought to be undiagnosed. If people with COPD were to be identified early it may be possible to improve disease management through improved self management and intervention.

The day brought together experts from the health sector, corporate sector, health technology entrepreneurs and pharmaceutical partners. The facilitated workshop took participants on a creative journey with particular emphasis on those who have respiratory symptoms but are unaware and are not currently engaged in the Health System.

For more about the event download our Finding the missing millions with COPD Briefing Note [PDF].
